That sounds like a trick sentence. It isn’t. If a lender tells you “18 percent” and you take that number home to plan your monthly budget, there’s a fair chance you’re underestimating the real cost by 15 to 25 percent. This piece is a quick, practical guide to reading a loan document the way lenders read it, and figuring out what your ₹1 lakh actually costs you across the year.

We’ll walk through APR, the processing fee, the GST that quietly rides on top, and the two or three line items most borrowers skip. There will be some math, but the useful kind. Back-of-a-napkin, not spreadsheet.

Why the advertised rate is a starting price, not a final one

Every lender in India advertises what’s called a “flat” or “reducing” interest rate. It is a real number. It is not the full number. On top of it sit a processing fee, GST on that processing fee, sometimes an insurance premium bundled with the loan, and, if you’re unlucky, a “documentation charge” or “convenience fee” nobody warned you about.

The single number that combines all of this is the APR, the Annualised Percentage Rate. Under the RBI Digital Lending Guidelines of 2022, every regulated lender in India has to show you the APR in a Key Fact Statement before you accept the loan. If a lender doesn’t show you a Key Fact Statement, that is the story right there. Close the tab.

What actually shows up in your bank account

Say you’re approved for a ₹1,00,000 personal loan at 18 percent for 12 months. Here is how the money actually moves.

Loan sanctioned: ₹1,00,000. Processing fee at 2 percent: ₹2,000. GST on the processing fee at 18 percent: ₹360. Amount that lands in your bank account: ₹97,640.

You are being charged interest on ₹1,00,000 but you only received ₹97,640. Your EMI at 18 percent flat over 12 months works out to roughly ₹9,833. Total repayment across the year: about ₹1,17,996. Your real cost of borrowing is ₹17,996 on the ₹97,640 you actually got, which is closer to a 20.5 percent APR than the 18 percent on the poster.

That gap is exactly why RBI made APR mandatory in the Key Fact Statement. It closes the marketing gap.

The processing fee is where lenders make quiet money

Processing fees in India usually sit between 1 and 3 percent of the loan amount. Some fintechs charge more on smaller loans, and a ₹10,000 loan with a ₹500 fee is already 5 percent right there. Two things to check on the KFS.

Is the processing fee deducted upfront from your disbursal, or added to your outstanding principal? The first is worse for your effective rate. And is GST already included in the fee number, or is 18 percent GST charged on top? The KFS will tell you, if you look.

A ₹2,000 processing fee on a ₹1 lakh loan feels reasonable in isolation. Now consider that on a 6-month tenure it hits you much harder than on a 24-month tenure, because you’re paying that fee once regardless of how long you borrow for. Shorter tenures amplify the bite.

The line items most borrowers skip past

Four charges tend to get skimmed. All four are real.

Late payment fees. Usually a flat ₹300 to ₹700 per missed EMI, plus penal interest on the overdue portion. Not fatal on one miss, punishing on three.

Bounce charges. When your bank refuses the auto-debit because of low balance, the lender charges you around ₹500 and your bank charges you another ₹500. That’s ₹1,000 gone for a temporary shortfall.

Prepayment or foreclosure charges. If you decide to close the loan early, some lenders take 2 to 4 percent of the outstanding balance. RBI has been pushing back on this for floating-rate loans; for personal loans it’s still common. Ask upfront.

Bundled insurance. This is the sneaky one. Some lenders quietly attach a credit-life insurance premium to your loan, so you end up borrowing to pay for insurance you didn’t specifically ask for. Ask if it can be removed. If not, that’s a signal about the lender.

A 60-second real-cost calculation

You do not need Excel for this. You need three numbers from the Key Fact Statement.

The principal that actually reaches your bank account (loan minus processing fee, minus GST, minus insurance if any). Call this A. Your monthly EMI. Call this E. The number of months. Call this N.

Total repayment equals E multiplied by N. Real cost of the loan is total repayment minus A. Divide the real cost by A. That’s your effective interest for the tenure. Not textbook APR math, but close enough to tell you whether the advertised number was honest.

Do this once. It takes a minute. It will reframe every “instant loan” ad you see for the next five years.

Where regulated lenders have to come clean

The Key Fact Statement is a standardised, RBI-mandated one-pager. Every regulated lender in India has to show it to you before you sign. It lists the sanctioned amount, disbursal amount, all fees, GST, APR, EMI, tenure, prepayment terms, and the grievance officer.

Whether you’re looking at a Branch loan, a bank loan, or an NBFC loan from any lender operating within the RBI framework, the KFS is where the honest number lives. If a loan app doesn’t produce a KFS, or shows you a document titled “KFS” with the APR line left blank, that isn’t a paperwork issue. That is your answer about the lender.

Quick check before you accept any loan

Six things to eyeball on the KFS.

Sanctioned amount versus disbursal amount, and whether the gap is explained on the same page. APR, not just the flat or reducing interest rate. The processing fee in rupees and percentage, with GST clearly marked as included or extra. Foreclosure terms. Late payment structure. Grievance officer name and RBI Ombudsman escalation path.

If any of these are missing, ask before you sign. If the lender can’t answer, that is the answer.

The point

Personal loan interest in India isn’t hidden. It’s just spread across five lines instead of one. The APR is the single honest number, and regulated lenders are required to give it to you upfront. Reading it once takes about a minute. Not reading it costs a few thousand rupees on a ₹1 lakh loan. Do the math on your own paper, not on the lender’s ad copy.

At Branch, the Key Fact Statement shows up before you accept, the APR is the real number, and there are no bundled surprises. Offer, amount and rate are subject to eligibility under the RBI Digital Lending Guidelines.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between interest rate and APR on a personal loan?+

The interest rate is the cost of borrowing the principal alone. The APR bundles the interest plus processing fees, GST, and any mandatory charges into a single annualised percentage. APR is almost always higher than the advertised rate. It is the more honest number to compare across lenders, and it is what RBI requires on the Key Fact Statement.

How is the processing fee calculated on personal loans in India?+

Processing fees usually range from 1 to 3 percent of the loan amount, plus 18 percent GST on the fee itself. On a ₹1 lakh loan at a 2 percent fee, that’s ₹2,000 plus ₹360 GST. Most lenders deduct this upfront, so the amount that lands in your bank is smaller than the sanctioned amount. Always confirm which way your lender handles it.

Why is the APR higher than the advertised interest rate?+

Because APR captures every charge you pay across the year, not just the interest.
